As we said, consumers want only the best for their pets. Luckily, Amazon has what they need. Here are the best-selling pet products in the marketplace.

Pet Food

More and more users go to Amazon for meals and treats for their pets. This was the case for both dogs and cats during Q1 2022:

  • Customers spent close to $148 million on dog treats, and over $30 million on cat treats.
  • Dry dog food brought in almost $250 million in sales, while dry cat food generated around $72 million.
  • Canned cat food sales went over $32 million, while dog canned food secured $22 million.

Toys

It’s important to keep our pets active and to share bits of joy with them.

This makes pet toys an all-round, best-selling subcategory.

This is no exception in 2022:

  • Users spent around $26 million on cat toys, during the year’s first quarter.
  • Dog supplies almost doubled this feat. As of Q1 2022, owners have spent almost $48 million on dog toys.

This is a must-have for any cat or dog owner. There’s no complete pet care without a good collar and leash to go out on a stroll with your pet. Furthermore, it’s the best way to attach identifying tags which help immensely in the unfortunate event that a pet goes missing.

Amazon is one of the most used marketplaces where users buy collars and leashes:

  • Dog collars almost generated $16 million in revenue between January and April.
  • As for dog leashes, this pet supply has produced over $8 million in revenue.
  • Cat collars have generated $4 million, while cat leashes amount to $2 million in sales.

Pet Houses and Towers

We give dogs and cats a home. But some could also enjoy a home within a home. For example, some cat owners favor towers, while dog owners go for outdoor cribs for their pets.

Both examples are a great selling opportunity for Amazon sellers:

  • Cat tower sales increased by 86% in Q1 2022. Sales for such items brought in $3 million in revenue.
  • Dog houses were not as profitable. But they still made over $1.5 million in sales.

Pets like to relax most of the time. We love them for it (and also envy them a bit).

It’s important for us that they have a cozy place to unwind after a long walk in the park or a fervent episode of the nighttime zoomies!

AMZ Advisers Creating Growth for Pet Supply Sellers | Case Study

Now, there are great sales opportunities in the pet supply market. But Amazon is also a highly competitive marketplace.

It would be hard for brands to make a real dent in the pet-related categories. Luckily, no one says you should go at it alone.

For one, you could partner up with a pro marketing agency. These parties have the experience and skills needed to delight pet owners and drive your sales.

This is actually a field in which we have a bit of experience. A few years ago, we were approached by a company in the pet supplies category.

This client was looking to diversify and grow their Amazon sales.

Up to that point, they’d had licensing agreements with various brands and strong manufacturing capabilities.

Thus, it made sense for them to adopt a Vendor relationship with Amazon.

Hybrid Distributor Selling Model

Vendor brands adopt a hybrid distributor selling model. Amazon purchases the product directly from the manufacturer and takes over B2C sales.

This approach worked well because vendors enjoy better margins – in exchange for less control over sales.

Our client already had a large catalog listed in the marketplace. However, they wanted to remedy cost, licensing, and retail pricing issues.

Their sales on Amazon were consistent. But the well-known brand names that they had licensed should have been driving better profit margins.

Our task was to offer guidance on where to focus their energy to maximize sales and create effective ad campaigns.

Finally, we found unique growth opportunities to justify the client manufacturing of new products.

Here are the actions we took over a 2-year period:

  • In-depth market research. We analyzed the company’s catalog and capabilities to launch new products. This allowed us to identify immediate areas for growth.
  • Develop an ad strategy focused on maximizing sales. We created promotions that encouraged customers to try out the client’s products. We also shared discount codes to encourage sales.
  • Clean up their existing content. We performed in-depth keyword research to create new SEO content for their products.
  • Optimize product listings. We incorporated relevant frontend and backend keywords in the client’s listings to boost search rankings. We also improved their graphic content to drive conversions.

Our Milestones

In the end, our strategy and execution exceeded expectations:

  • Increased monthly shipped cost of goods (COGs) from $30,000 to over $600,000.
  • Generated more than $2.4 million in ad sales. That’s equal to 42% of the client’s total account sales.
  • Identified new product opportunities, which generated over $200,000 in shipped COGs per month.

This represented an unexpected monthly growth rate for our client. Thanks to our efforts, their Amazon store increased sales by 20 times.

We look forward to continuing our work with them, in hopes that we can help them dominate the pet supplies market on Amazon.

Final Thoughts

Our pets are family members, which is why we want only the best for them. Lucky for us, Amazon feels the same way.

Pet supplies are not seasonal products; for the most part. Therefore, they could prove to be steady sellers, which help bring in consistent profits for you.

You should also take note of the tips we shared to attract new pet owners to your listings. Such strategies may help you drive your pet supply sales to the next level.

Regardless of your strategy, always strive to build unique connections with customers. That’ll reap better results from your efforts, and the best satisfaction for pet owners.
